The Saco River (/ ˈ s ɑː k oʊ / SAH-koh, Abenaki: Sαkóhki) is a river in northeastern New Hampshire and southwestern Maine in the United States.It drains a rural area of 1,703 square miles (4,410 km 2) of forests and farmlands west and southwest of Portland, emptying into the Atlantic Ocean at Saco Bay, 136 miles (219 km) from its source. The lake lies at the foot of White Horse Ledge and just south of Cathedral Ledge, both of which are noted rock climbing destinations in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The lake is part of the Saco River watershed. The lake is classified as a warmwater fishery, with observed species including smallmouth bass and yellow perch. [2]
At 3,257 acres (1,318 ha), [1] it is the sixth-largest lake located entirely in New Hampshire. The lake is fed by the West Branch (entering from the north), the Bearcamp and Lovell rivers (entering from the west), and the Pine River (from the south). Water leaves the eastern end of the lake via the Ossipee River, flowing to the Saco River in Maine.

North of the high point of the notch, Crawford Brook flows more gently northwest to the Ammonoosuc River, a tributary of the Connecticut River.
