Glacier Peak is located at the center of the Wallowa Mountains and is set within the Eagle Cap Wilderness, on land managed by Wallowa–Whitman National Forest. [2] The peak is situated 2.6 miles northwest of Cusick Mountain, 0.5 mile southwest of Glacier Lake and 0.7 mile southeast of line parent Eagle Cap. [2]
The Wallowa–Whitman National Forest is a United States National Forest in the U.S. states of Oregon and Idaho.Formed upon the merger of the Wallowa and Whitman national forests in 1954, it is located in the northeastern corner of Oregon, in Wallowa, Baker, Union, Grant, and Umatilla counties, and includes small areas in Nez Perce and Idaho counties in Idaho.
It is known as the Wallowa Lake Highway No. 10 (see Oregon highways and routes). OR 82 is part of the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway. [2] OR 82 is the main route from remote Wallowa County to La Grande which serves as a transportation hub, providing access to main roads such as Interstate 84 (I-84) and US 30.

A settlement in the mountains was built in 1861. [26] In 1863, a new treaty was signed that relinquished lands that granted by an 1855 treaty, turning them over to the American government. This same year, the settlers in the mountains moved to present-day La Grande. These lands included the Wallowa Valley, home of Chief Joseph. [26]
