The qualification for the Basketball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's tournament took place between 2006 and 2008; all five FIBA zones sent in teams. The first qualifying tournament was the 2006 FIBA World Championship for Women in which the champion was guaranteed of a place in the Olympics.
Through this tournament, the final five qualifying berths for the 2008 Olympics women's basketball competition were captured by Spain, Belarus, Latvia, the Czech Republic, and Brazil. The 12 teams that competed in the 2008 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament were based on the finishes in each of FIBA’s five zone qualifying tournaments.
The women's tournament of the basketball at the 2008 Olympics at Beijing, China began on August 9 and ended on August 23, when the United States defeated Australia 92–65 for the gold medal. All games were held at the Wukesong Indoor Stadium .
