Denon (株式会社デノン, Kabushiki Gaisha Denon) is a Japanese electronics company dealing with audio equipment. The Denon brand came from a merger of Denki Onkyo (not to be confused with the other Onkyo ) and others in 1939, but it originally started as Nippon Chikuonki Shoukai in 1910 by Frederick Whitney Horn, an American entrepreneur.
It was formed in 2002 from the merger of Denon and Marantz. [1] [2] It had acquired several other companies since that time. Prior to 2008, it was owned by RHJ International, which is associated with Ripplewood Holdings. In 2008, it was acquired by K. K. BCJ-2, a Tokyo corporation owned by investment funds advised by Bain Capital. [3]
In March 2017, the Sound United audio division acquired YS consumer electronics company D+M Group, whose brands included Denon, HEOS by Denon, Marantz and Boston Acoustics. At the time, D+M was the world's largest supplier of audio/video receivers. [8] In October 2020 Sound United LLC acquired Bowers & Wilkins. [9]
Marantz is a company that develops and sells high-end audio products. [2] The company was founded in New York, but is now based in California. The first Marantz audio product was designed and built by Saul Marantz in his home in Kew Gardens, New York. [3]
Classé became part of the Bowers & Wilkins Group in 2001, and in 2018 it was acquired by Sound United, parent company of Denon, Marantz, Bowers & Wilkins, Polk, Definitive Technology, HEOS and Boston Acoustics. Classé components are designed in Montréal and manufactured in Shirakawa, Japan.
