Castle Field was renamed Castle Air Force Base on 13 January 1948, this following the establishment of the USAF as a separate military service in September 1947. On 27 June 1949, the Air Force Reserve 's 447th Bombardment Group was activated at Castle and equipped with the B-29s formerly of the 93d Bomb Wing.
