Ventral rectopexy is a surgical procedure for external rectal prolapse, internal rectal prolapse (rectal intussusception), and sometimes other conditions such as rectocele, obstructed defecation syndrome, or solitary rectal ulcer syndrome.
A newer version of the procedure is termed ventral mesh rectopexy, which has also been used for SRUS. [14] It may be performed with or without anterior resection (removal of a portion of the front wall of the rectum). [9] A mesh may be used to reinforce the anterior rectal wall. [8]
A rectal prolapse occurs when walls of the rectum have prolapsed to such a degree that they protrude out of the anus and are visible outside the body. [2] However, most researchers agree that there are 3 to 5 different types of rectal prolapse, depending on whether the prolapsed section is visible externally, and whether the full or only partial thickness of the rectal wall is involved.
