By 1972, KLOS had become the top-rated FM rock station in Los Angeles. [6] The station promoted an outdoor rock concert called "California Jam" held on April 6, 1974, at the Ontario Motor Speedway in Ontario, California. KLOS has sponsored a blood drive in conjunction with the American Red Cross annually since 1982.
From 1956 to 1991, the station had call sign KDAY and had top 40, rock, and R&B formats through the early 1980s. In 1983, KDAY became the first station in Los Angeles to play hip hop music ; as a result, KDAY became the most popular station among black listeners in the area.
The classic hip-hop format dates back to 2004, when KZAB, a Spanish-language FM station serving the Los Angeles area, was re-launched as KDAY.The re-launched station served to capitalize on the heritage of the original KDAY on the AM dial (now KBLA), which in the 1980s was the first radio station in the United States to play hip-hop music on a full-time basis.
