Darmstadt (German: [ˈdaʁmʃtat] ⓘ) is a city in the state of Hesse in Germany, located in the southern part of the Rhine-Main-Area (Frankfurt Metropolitan Region). Darmstadt has around 160,000 inhabitants, making it the fourth largest city in the state of Hesse after Frankfurt am Main, Wiesbaden, and Kassel.
Darmstadt is one of the three Regierungsbezirke of Hesse, Germany, located in the south of the state. The other two Regierungsbezirke are Giessen and Kassel Kreise

The district was created in 1975 by merging the previous districts of Darmstadt and Dieburg. In 1963 the district was twinned with the district of North East Derbyshire, England, in 1990 with the district Zwickauer Land in Saxony, Germany, and in 1995 with the Mladá Boleslav region in the Czech Republic.
As borough of Darmstadt, Eberstadt has no sister cities, as sister cities are a matter for the city as a whole (see Darmstadt's sister cities). In a development area at the southeastern border (Am Frankenstein district), some streets are named according to Darmstadt's sister cities, e.g. Chesterfieldstraße or Grazstraße.
At the beginning of the 19th century, Darmstadt became the center of the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt, which led to a major expansion of the city area. By 1875 at the latest, Darmstadt and Bessungen had finally grown together. On April 1, 1888, after lengthy negotiations, Bessungen was incorporated into Darmstadt.
Arheilgen is a district in the north of the city of Darmstadt in Hesse, Germany, incorporated in 1937. Arheilgen borders the Darmstadt district of Wixhausen to the North, to the West is the town of Weiterstadt, to the East is the Darmstadt district of Kranichstein and to the South is the city center of Darmstadt.
