Susan Mary Kiefel AC KC (/ ˈ k iː f əl /; [1] [2] born 1954) is an Australian lawyer and barrister who was the 13th Chief Justice of Australia from 2017 to 2023. She concurrently served on the High Court of Australia from 2007 to 2023, previously being a judge of both the Supreme Court of Queensland and the Federal Court of Australia .
Stephen John Gageler AC (/ ɡ eɪ ɡ l ər /; [1] [2] born 5 July 1958) is an Australian judge and former barrister.He has been a Justice of the High Court of Australia since 2012 and was appointed Chief Justice of Australia in 2023.
Susan Crennan was a justice from 2005 to 2015, and Virginia Bell from 2009 to 2021. Susan Kiefel was the first woman to be appointed Chief Justice of Australia. She was appointed in 2017 and had been a justice from 2007 to 2017. Of the seven current justices, four are men, including the chief justice, and three are women.
In May 2021, The High Court of Australia held a function in the building, to celebrate 40+ years since construction completion. Chief Justice Susan Kiefel invited Bouman to make a speech to record the history of its genesis /creation, from the architectural competition to the start of on-site construction.
