The Purple Rose Theatre Company is a 501(c) non-profit regional theater located in Chelsea, Michigan. It was founded in 1991 [ 1 ] by actor and playwright Jeff Daniels . [ 2 ] Its name comes from the 1985 film The Purple Rose of Cairo , [ 3 ] which starred Daniels and for which he earned his first Golden Globe nomination.
At that time, actor Jeff Daniels purchased the building from the parish and donated it to the Chelsea Center for the Development of the Arts. [4] As of 2013, it is used as the home of the Chelsea Center for the Arts, [4] with the Great Hall used as rehearsal space for the Purple Rose Theatre Company.
The Purple Rose Theatre in Chelsea, Michigan, led off its 2012–13 season with Superior Donuts. In May 2011, Superior Donuts was directed by Kate Powers [ 4 ] and performed for an audience of prisoners and community guests by a cast of prisoners who participate in Rehabilitation Through the Arts at Sing Sing Correctional Facility.
Mantooth is an Associate Artist of The Purple Rose Theatre Company in Chelsea, Michigan, founded by Jeff Daniels, [5] since 2003. Mantooth completed a three-month run of Tracy Letts' Superior Donuts in 2012 [39] at the theater. Mantooth performed in Carey Crim's Morning after Grace at the Purple Rose Theatre in the Fall 2016.
