The A2 Highway (also known as the R4 Highway) is a primary road in Zimbabwe running from Harare to Nyamapanda at the border with Mozambique. The Mozambican side border post is called Cochemane. This is a busy entry point used by people travelling by road between South Africa, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
The road runs in a southern direction from Harare to Beitbridge Border Post (between Zimbabwe and South Africa), covering a total distance of 571 km. The Harare–Beitbridge road is part of the Regional Trunk Road Network (RTRN Link Nr 25). On the South African it joins the N1 Highway which runs the whole length of South Africa to Cape Town. [10]
Each transit vehicle along the RTRN is issued a permit which states the destination of that particular vehicle. Beitbridge is a border town in the province of Matabeleland South, Zimbabwe. The name also refers to the border post and bridge spanning the Limpopo River, which forms the political border between South Africa and Zimbabwe. The border on the South African side of the river is also named Beitbridge.
The A7 Road picks up from Botswana's A1 Road at Plumtree border post and runs eastwards for 110 km to Bulawayo.Driving from Bulawayo to South Africa via Botswana the A7 Road crosses the border into Botswana joining the A1 road which continues south through Francistown, then Gaborone to Ramatlabama at the border with South Africa.
Beitbridge is a border crossing on the Limpopo River, [2] located just south of Beitbridge in Zimbabwe. It is the busiest border post in the region, handling as many as 500 trucks each day. [ 3 ] The bridge was named the Alfred Beit Road Bridge , after mining financier Alfred Beit , who provided funds for its construction.
The road carries between 1,000 and 5,000 vehicles per day, with the heavier flows in the proximity of Harare. It is therefore proper to rehabilitate this road. The Harare-Beitbridge road is part of the trunk road network of Zimbabwe, which is a part of the North-South Corridor – one of the major arterial links in the regional road network.
