The current FM 2499 was designated on September 27, 1960, running from FM 1171 south to the Denton–Tarrant county line. The highway was extended further south to SH 121 on November 29, 1982. This extension of FM 2499 ran across the Grapevine Lake dam and through the lake's spillway.
