These RAD-units were from 1939 converted into Luftwaffe construction companies and battalions. From 1941 construction regiments, and sometimes construction brigades, were created. From 1968 to 1991, the 3rd battery of the anti-aircraft missile battalion 24 of the Nike air defense force was stationed at the air base, and from 1993 to 2006 (relocation to Bad Sülze) the anti-aircraft missile group 24 of the anti-aircraft missile squadron 2. The base was closed after Jagdbombergeschwader 43 was disbanded on 30 September 1993.
It was redesignated as Schweinfurt Air Base on 1 August 1947, in anticipation of the Air Force becoming a separate branch of the U.S. Armed Forces. On 5 October 1947, control of the airfield was turned over to the United States Army as the Air Force consolidated its forces around the Munich area.

Taktisches Luftwaffengeschwader (Tactical Air Force Wing) 73 "Steinhoff", formerly known as Jagdgeschwader 73 (Fighter Wing 73), is a fighter wing of the German Air Force.
