In 2001, HomePlace and Montgomery Ward closed the last of their stores; HomePlace was replaced with Steve & Barry's in 2003. Three years later, Kohl's relocated outside the mall; Kohl's has been replaced with Burlington Coat Factory, which opened in 2005. [15] The Montgomery Ward store location anchoring the west end of the mall was closed by 2001.
Willmar was established as the county seat in 1871 and was incorporated as a village in 1874 and as a city in 1901. [9] Willmar was the site of a bank robbery by the Machine Gun Kelly gang on July 15, 1930. They robbed the Bank of Willmar (later Otto Bremer Trust) of about $70,000 (equivalent to $1,277,000 in 2023) and wounded three people. [10]
The mall opened in 1991 with Herberger's, Target and JCPenney. [3] Scheels All Sports was added in 1993 [4] and relocated in 2006. [5] A health clinic opened at the mall in 2007. [6]
An addition to the mall was constructed, allowing JCPenney to open a 247,902-square-foot (23,030.8 m 2; 5.6910-acre; 2.30308 ha) store in 1972; it became Southdale's third anchor store, following Dayton's and Donaldson's. [26] Along with the new anchor store came an entire new mall corridor connecting JCPenney to the original structure of the mall.
