In 1889 the U.S. Office of Education promoted class piano programs in elementary schools as a viable way for students to get an affordable music education. The College of Pharmacy at ULM is Louisiana's only publicly supported comprehensive center for pharmaceutical education, research, and service. The college includes several modern specialized instructional and health service facilities and numerous affiliated off-campus teaching hospitals and pharmacies throughout the state.
The Department of Education now offers the Bachelor of Science in elementary education and alternative certification in the areas of elementary education, grades 1–5; health and physical education, grades K–12; and secondary education, grades 6–12, for the disciplines of biology, English, history, and mathematics.
The majority of the school's teaching spaces, faculty offices, and music library, are located in the Earl V. Moore Building. This building is named after a previous dean of the school, and was designed in a mid-century modern style by architect Eero Saarinen . [ 22 ]
The DMA degree usually takes about three to four years of full-time study to complete (in addition to the master's and bachelor's degrees), preparing students to be professional performers, conductors, and composers. As a terminal degree, the DMA qualifies its recipient to work in university, college, and conservatory teaching/research positions.
Lutkin was succeeded in 1928 by Carl Beecher, who had earned the school's first bachelor's degree. Music education professor John W. Beattie was appointed the school's third dean in 1936. During his administration, the graduate program was expanded and Lutkin Hall constructed in 1941. George Howerton assumed the deanship in 1951.
