Pilosocereus millspaughii, commonly called the Key Largo tree cactus, [citation needed] is a species of flowering plant in the family Cactaceae, native to Florida, The Bahamas, Cuba, Haiti, and the Turks and Caicos Islands. [1] It was first described by Nathaniel Lord Britton in 1909 as Cephalocereus millspaughii. [2]
Pilosocereus robinii is a species of cactus known by the common name Key tree-cactus. [2] It is native to the Florida Keys in the United States. [3] It also occurs in Western Cuba and the Northern Bahamas. It has been erroneously reported from Puerto Rico, [4] the Virgin Islands, [4] and Mexico. [2]
The plants that bear such flowers can be tall, columnar, and sometimes extremely large and tree-like, but more frequently are thin-stemmed climbers. While some night-blooming cereus are grown indoors in homes or greenhouses in colder climates, most plants are too large or ungainly for this treatment and are only found outdoors in tropical areas.
Just like other cactus species, O. austrina has spines on the joints and on the stem. O. austrina can grow up to 1 m (3 ft 3 in) in height, [6] which will form large shrubs but can also form small treelets. [4] This cactus' plants are flowering, with yellow flowers that produce red fruits. [3]
The flowers, which have a scent reminiscent of rotting meat, have fleshy outer tepals and red-colored inner tepals that reach 2.5 centimeters in length. Flowering occurs year-round, with a peak season in December through April. This cactus is colonial, forming colonies of "trunked" plants and several "pups". [5]
The flowers are showy and are white with a deep red and orange or red-orange center. The flowers bloom at night and close during the day. This cactus blooms a few times a year for several weeks at a time. This cactus often forms thickets in coastal hammocks which can be impenetrable and spiny. [9] Open bloom Fairy castles buds
The flowers are large, funnelform, 9–30 cm (3 + 1 ⁄ 2 – 11 + 3 ⁄ 4 in) long, usually white, sometimes pink, purple, rarely cream, yellow, greenish, and open at night. The fruits are globose to ovoid to oblong, 3–13 cm ( 1 + 1 ⁄ 4 –5 in) long, fleshy, naked, usually red but sometimes yellow, pulp white, pink or red.
