Willem van Aelst (16 May 1627 – buried 22 May 1683) [1] was a Dutch Golden Age artist who specialized in still-life painting with flowers or game. Biography.
Anna Ruysch often used S-curve shapes to enliven her compositions and add dynamism, as did Rachel Ruysch, a technique that originated with Willem van Aelst. [4] Because Anna Ruysch rarely signed her work, there are fewer than ten paintings attributed to her with certainty.
This work was painted in Amsterdam where it was signed and dated Guill.mo van Aelst. 1663. Van Aelst had recently returned from Italy and thus signed as "Guillelmo" rather than Willem. He remained in Amsterdam until his death and was a strong influence on other Amsterdam flower painters, including Rachel Ruysch.
Ruysch studied with van Aelst until his death in 1683. [6] Besides painting technique he taught her how to arrange a bouquet in a vase so it would look spontaneous and less formalized. This technique produced a more realistic and three-dimensional effect in her paintings.
