Drum Corps International (DCI) is a governing body for drum and bugle corps. Founded in 1971 and known as "marching music's major league," DCI develops and enforces rules of competition and judges at sanctioned drum and bugle corps competitions throughout the United States and Canada. It is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana.
In 1990, the corps declared bankruptcy and moved from Kansas to Texas, despite protests from the local community. Genesis was founded in September 2009 as a means for youth of the Rio Grande Valley to compete in drum corps, which they saw as the next level of musical competition beyond marching band. After an examination by Drum Corps International to determine the group's organizational stability, it was announced that Genesis was approved to compete in 2010.
