The UAE has massive solar generation potential, and its energy policy has shifted substantially due to the declining price of solar. The Dubai Clean Energy Strategy aimed to provide 7% of Dubai's energy from clean energy sources by 2020 and planned to increase this target to 25 per cent by 2030 and 75 per cent by 2050. [5]
Total installed solar power capacity in the UAE was over 5 gigawatts (GW) after switching on the 2 gigawatt (GW) Al Dhafra solar project in November 2023, up from 133 MW in 2014. [3] Solar energy provided 4.5% of national electricity generation in the UAE in 2022 and 8.3% in 2023, compared to 0.3% in 2014. [4]

Shams Solar Power Station (Arabic: شمس, lit. 'Sun') is a concentrating solar power station near Madinat Zayed , Abu Dhabi , the United Arab Emirates . The solar power station is located approximately 120 kilometres (75 mi) southwest of Abu Dhabi and 6 kilometres (4 mi) from Madinat Zayed on the road from Tarif to the Liwa Oasis .
Later in 2018 it was announced that 250 MW of solar PV would be added to the project [18] now named Noor Energy 1. [19] The solar power tower is the tallest in the world, standing at 260 m (850 ft). The Noor Energy 1 solar complex will have 15 hours of energy storage capacity, and be able to deliver power 24 hours a day.
