Tennessee Eastman was responsible for managing the Y-12 National Security Complex at Oak Ridge, Tennessee which produced enriched uranium for the Manhattan Project, from 1943 to May 1947. In 1960, there was an explosion at Eastman's Kingsport plant. It occurred in the Aniline production. Some 16 people were killed and many more were injured.
The current plant is on two sites: Plant A is in Kingsport, and Plant B is about 4 miles (6.4 km) away in a less developed part of Hawkins County. The two plants are connected by rail. Plant A has 120 acres (0.49 km 2). Plant B has 5,900 acres (24 km 2). The site as a whole includes 465 buildings. [1]
The S-50 Thermal Diffusion Plant at the K-25 site also provided feed material for Y-12's Beta Calutrons. Tennessee Eastman was hired by the Army Corps of Engineers to manage Y-12 during the Manhattan Project. The company transferred scientists from Kingsport, Tennessee, to Y-12 and operated the plant from 1943 to May 1947. [7]

Coover worked as a chemist for Eastman Kodak from 1944–1973 and as the Vice President of research and development for the company from 1973-1984. [1] [4] In 1951, Coover had moved to Eastman Kodak's chemical plant in Kingsport Tennessee. [5] [6] Coover was married to Muriel Zumbach Coover for over 60 years until her death in 2005.
