Since 2015, it has also been co-sanctioned by the European Tour. From 1964 until 2000, the tournament was held exclusively at either Delhi Golf Club or Royal Calcutta Golf Club.

All administrative powers of the RCGC were transferred to the IGU after the latter's establishment, including the right to conduct the Amateur Golf Championship of India.

Australian and five time British Open champion Peter Thomson used to stop over in India on his way from Australia to Europe, and he won the championship in 1964, 1966 and 1976.
