Since 2004, the Hampton Roads region has been searching for funding to complete major projects such as the addition of a new Midtown Tunnel and the extension of the Martin Luther King Freeway in Portsmouth, the addition of a third harbor crossing between the Southside and the Peninsula, and widening I-64 on both sides of the water, projects that would cost a combined total of $3.8 billion USD. [1]
Hampton was first settled in 1859, officially incorporated as the "Town of Hampton" in 1870, and officially reincorporated as the "City of Hampton" in 1925. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] At the time, it was at the junction of the Georgia Southern and Florida Railway and the Seaboard Air Line Railroad with stations for both.
The first Florida Railroad Commission was established in 1887 [3] and abolished in 1891. [4] It was reestablished in 1897 [5] and issued its first decision in September 1899, affirming the right of the Atlantic, Valdosta and Western Railway to enter and use Jacksonville Union Terminal [6] As Florida grew, the commission's purpose expanded.
