TASMAC is wholly owned by the government of Tamil Nadu, coming under the purview of the Ministry of Prohibition and Excise. Its headquarters is situated at the CMDA towers in Egmore , Chennai . It is governed by a board whose members belong to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS).

The department was established in 1803 by the Board of Revenue Regulation, 1803 by the British East India Company and was further modified through Revenue Recovery Act, 1864 during the British Raj. [1]
The department is responsible for planning, designing, construction and maintenance of Government buildings across the state. It is also responsible for the execution of local area development works sanctioned under MLAs and MP funds, reconstruction works during calamities and issuance of rent certificate for private buildings used by Government departments.
