Petroglyph Games, Inc. is an American video game developer based in Las Vegas. It was founded in 2003 by Joe Bostic, Michael Legg and Steve Tall, programmers formerly of Westwood Studios , after that company was closed down earlier that year.
The site was known to early American settlers, and became part of a cattle ranch around the turn of the 20th century. Some historic ranch buildings remain near the visitor center. The US Forest Service acquired the site in 1994 when it became the V Bar V Heritage Site. The site was renamed Crane Petroglyph Heritage Site on March 16, 2024. [5]
The petroglyphs, each around 10x10cm, are of iconic symbols representing animals, plants, or cultural items. The unusual features of these symbols compared to other petroglyphs sites are that the symbols rarely overlap, and they may be arranged as rows of repeating images of up to 20 or more in a line.

Matsieng is located on a flat outcrop of sandstone. The area was used as a watering hole for herders’ livestock and many of the petroglyphs suffered from the heavy foot traffic until recently. In 1918, study of the Matsieng footprints was conducted by Maria Wilman, who took rubbings of various petroglyphs onsite. [3]
