Renji Abarai (阿散井 恋次, Abarai Renji) is a fictional character in the Japanese anime and manga series Bleach created by Tite Kubo.In the series, he initially challenges Ichigo Kurosaki, the protagonist of the series, but he later joins forces with him to help rescue Rukia Kuchiki halfway through the Soul Society arc.

Renji's fight with Zabimaru continues, and Zabimaru takes the advantage when they are able to activate bankai while Renji, no longer able to control them, cannot. Renji considers his own weaknesses, and tricks Zabimaru into taking his sword, then breaks it with a kidō spell and then he defeats Zabimaru by firing the broken shards at them.
Renji attempts to rescue Rukia, but is confronted by his captain, Byakuya. Renji unleashes his bankai Hihiō Zabimaru, only to be overpowered when Byakuya reveals his own bankai Senbonzakura Kageyoshi. Despite being defeated, Renji manages to inflict a minor wound on his captain before collapsing from his injuries as Byakuya congratulates him.
Renji ends up using his bankai to fight Byakuya, but his lack of experience with his bankai stymies his efforts. Byakuya uses his shikai to try and counterattack but fails and Renji reveals that his bankai is held together by his spiritual pressure. Byakuya uses his own bankai and attacks again, wounding Renji and causes his bankai to fade away ...
As Ichigo and Orihime battle Yhwach, Byakuya tells Rukia and Renji to head to the palace to aid Ichigo. When Renji asks Szayelaporro how he negated his bankai, Szayelaporro reveals that he gathered the data using parasites stored in the body of his older brother Ilfort Grantz, who Renji fought and defeated. With only his shikai, Renji's attacks cannot harm Szayelaporro. Meanwhile, Ulquiorra meets Ichigo to inform him of Rukia's death.
