Early research on the steam engine before 1700 was closely linked to the quest for self-propelled vehicles and ships [citation needed], the first practical applications from 1712 were stationary plant working at very low pressure which entailed engines of very large dimensions.
The London Steam Carriage was an early steam-powered road vehicle constructed by Richard Trevithick in 1803 and the world's first self-propelled passenger-carrying vehicle. Cugnot had built a steam vehicle 30 years previously, but that had been a slow-moving artillery tractor, not built to carry passengers.

Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot (26 February 1725 – 2 October 1804) was a French inventor who built the world's first full-size and working self-propelled mechanical land-vehicle, the "Fardier à vapeur" – effectively the world's first automobile.
[1] [2] In 1649, Hans Hautsch of Nuremberg built a clockwork-driven carriage. [1] [3] In 1672, a small-scale steam-powered vehicle was created by Ferdinand Verbiest; [4] the first steam-powered automobile capable of human transportation was built by Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot in 1769.
The first steam engine to be applied industrially was the "fire-engine" or "Miner's Friend", designed by Thomas Savery in 1698. This was a pistonless steam pump, similar to the one developed by Worcester. Savery made two key contributions that greatly improved the practicality of the design.
The inscription reads "RICHARD TREVITHICK 1771-1833 PIONEER OF HIGH PRESSURE STEAM BUILT THE FIRST STEAM LOCOMOTIVE TO RUN ON RAILS. ON FEBRUARY 21ST 1804 IT TRAVERSED THE SPOT ON WHICH THIS MONUMENT STANDS ON ITS WAY TO ABERCYNON". [49] A short walk north of that is the (slightly misspelled) Trevethick Street, named after Trevithick.
The London Steam Carriage was built by Richard Trevithick in 1803 and ran successfully in London, but the venture failed to attract interest and soon folded up. An amphibious steam car was built by Oliver Evans in 1805. The first substantiated steam car for personal use was that of Josef Božek in 1815. [3]
