A previous route numbered FM 1492 was designated on August 25, 1949, from US 77, 3.5 miles (5.6 km) south of Waxahachie, southeast 5.6 miles (9.0 km) to Nash. On October 25, 1955, the road was extended southeast 5.3 miles (8.5 km) to SH 34 at Avalon. FM 1492 was cancelled on June 1, 1962, and transferred to FM 55.

Loop 374 was re-routed through Mission in 1987, with westbound traffic being re-routed onto Mayberry Road and Tom Landry Street near the town's central business district. The highway was cancelled and re-designated as Bus. US 83 in 1991.
