In other rhythm games I usually use fingers, but I got super comfortable with thumbs in sekai. It can't tell if you splay your fingers, for example, because the index controllers simply don't have that capability. Insofar as the index controllers are capable of tracking fingers, they move in-game. I assumed you meant tracking all five fingers, since you specifically mentioned that it was only tracking your thumb, middle, and index fingers.
The claw grip is a must, pointer fingers on the bumpers, middle fingers on the triggers. Controllers are deigned for this imo, I used to just use my index fingers for both, but as I’ve grown up the claw grip is a perfect fit and just makes sense.
Mine act the same way regarding the distance of fingers needed from the controller before the virtual fingers start to bend. I thought it was normal. The virtual fingers don't start to bend until my real world fingers are about a centimeter away from the grip, then they start to curve in.
I couldn't type. I used my two index fingers and my two middle fingers and I hit the spacebar with my right index finger and I had to look at the keyboard for roughly 50% of the time that I spent typing. I'd estimate that I could sustain around 35 wpm for about 20 seconds using this "homebrewed" style of typing.
