The Mongrel Mob (sometimes self-labelled as the Mighty Mongrel Mob or colloquially known as the Mob) is an organised crime street gang and prison gang based in New Zealand. With a network of more than thirty chapters throughout the country and additional operations in Australia and Canada , the Mob is the largest gang in New Zealand . [ 3 ]
In July 2020, 10 members of the Tribesmen Christchurch confronted a small group of Mongrel Mob members outside of the Christchurch District Court. This confrontation led to a fight occurring, during which a Mongrel Mob member's head was stomped on multiple times. The fight was broken up by Court Security officers. [16]
By the 1970s, established gangs included Black Power, Mongrel Mob, Head Hunters and Barbarian Stormtroopers. Some had friends in high places, with Prime Minister Robert Muldoon partying at a Black Power pad in 1976 and Mayor of Wellington Michael Fowler stumping bail for seven of them after an altercation with the Mongrel Mob. [12] The stated aim of the bill was to "provide an environment free from gang intimidation" in all Government premises, including schools, hospitals and local authority premises, as well as those of central government.
