Cape Town [a] is the legislative capital of South Africa. It is the country's oldest city and the seat of the Parliament of South Africa. [13] Cape Town is the country's second-largest city, after Johannesburg, and the largest in the Western Cape. [14] The city is part of the City of Cape Town metropolitan municipality.
From about 2003 until 2004, the logo consisted of a white outline of Table Mountain on a rainbow brush stroke background. [2] From 1996 until around 2003, the flag featured a silhouette of Table Mountain. It was created by a graphic designer and was not registered with the South African Bureau of Heraldry.

The seal of Cape Town granted in 1804, and also the arms which were an integral part of the seal, therefor remained in use. At the end of the 19th century a Patent of Arms was requested from the College of Arms in London.
