Epsom Downs is a Grade 1 racecourse in a hilly area near Epsom in Surrey, England which is used for thoroughbred horse racing. The "Downs" referred to in the name are part of the North Downs . The course has a crowd capacity of 130,000 including people watching from the Epsom Downs , an area freely open to the public. [ 1 ]

The Woodcote Stakes, initially spelled Woodcot, was first run in 1794. It was run over the last half-mile of Epsom Downs Racecourse. Colts carried 8 st, with fillies carrying 7 st 1 lb. [1] The race was not run between 1800 and 1806, but was re-established in 1807 and run over the last six furlongs of Epsom track.
An event called the Princess Elizabeth Stakes used to be contested at Epsom in April. It was restricted to three-year-old fillies, and it served as a trial for the Oaks . For a period it held Group 3 status, but it was subsequently downgraded to Listed level.
