The Kamchatka superbolide is estimated to have had a mass of roughly 1600 tons, and a diameter of 9 to 14 meters depending on its density, making it the third largest asteroid to impact Earth since 1900, after the Chelyabinsk meteor and the Tunguska event. The fireball exploded in an airburst 25.6 kilometres (15.9 mi) above Earth's surface.
The asteroid last passed perihelion on 13 February 2021 and impacted Earth before it was set to make its next perihelion on 15 March 2023. [ 5 ] [ 3 ] The last time 2023 CX 1 made a close approach to Earth was around 7 (± 1) June 2000, when it passed around 150–161 LD (58–62 million km; 36–38 million mi) from the planet. [ 4 ]
The table below is arranged by the continent's percentage of the Earth's land area, and where Asian and Russian structures are grouped together per EID convention. The global distribution of known impact structures apparently shows a surprising asymmetry, [ 33 ] with the small but well-funded European continent having a large percentage of ...
An asteroid burned up in the Earth’s atmosphere just hours after it was detected last month, the European Space Agency revealed in its latest newsletter.. The asteroid, called 2024 UQ, was first ...
The asteroid, described as "very small" by NASA, impacted Earth's atmosphere around 11:14 a.m. ET and created a fireball over eastern Russia, the space agency said in a post on X.
NASA captured the sound of a meteor careening through Mars' atmosphere, splintering, and crashing. Then a satellite photographed the impact craters.
2024 RW 1, previously known under its provisional designation CAQTDL2, [5] was a 1-meter-sized asteroid or meteoroid that struck the Earth's atmosphere and burned up harmlessly on September 5, 2024, at around 12:40 a.m. PHT (September 4, 16:40 UTC) above the western Pacific Ocean near Cagayan, Philippines.
2024 BX 1 is the eighth asteroid discovered before impacting Earth, and is Sárneczky's third discovery of an impacting asteroid. Before it impacted, 2024 BX 1 was a near-Earth asteroid on an Earth-crossing Apollo-type orbit. The bolide was studied in June 2024. It had a steep entry of 75.6° and an entry speed of 15.20 km/s.
