Family Affairs is a British soap opera that aired on Channel 5. It debuted on 30 March 1997, the day of the launch of said channel and was the first programme broadcast on the channel. It was screened as five thirty-minute episodes per week at 6:30pm on weekdays, followed by an omnibus edition on Sundays.
The channel replaced it with another soap opera popular in America Days of Our Lives, though after poor ratings it removed both soaps from weekday morning schedules in 2002. Channel 5 also acquired the rerun rights to the BBC and Network Ten serial drama Out of the Blue, which were screened from 2009 on Channel 5's digital sister channel, 5*.
In the United Kingdom, Sunset Beach aired on Channel 5 from March 1997 to February 2000 becoming only the second American daytime soap opera to air on a UK terrestrial TV channel (the first being, coincidentally, Santa Barbara on ITV. Others ran only on satellite and cable channels).
