[citation needed] Dabhol was of great importance in the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. It used to be the principal port of South Konkan region, carrying on trade with ports in the Mediterranean, the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. During the 13th to 15th centuries this port was ruled by the Bahamani dynasty and was known as Mustafabad.
The Konkan extends throughout the western coasts of Maharashtra, and Goa. [1] It is bounded by the Western Ghats mountain range (also known as Sahyadri) in the east, the Arabian Sea in the west, the Daman Ganga River in the north, and the River Aghanashini in the south.
Dapoli has a seaboard of 50 km (31 mi) which stretches from Velas, Maharashtra Velas – Kelshi in the North to Dabhol in the South. The coastline differs in its general characteristics from other parts of Konkan. It is densely covered by coconut farms. The principal rivers are Bharja in the north and Vashishthi in the south.

In 1819 South Konkan was formed as separate district with its headquarters first at Bankot and later at Ratnagiri. Three northern subdivisions were transferred to Thane district in 1830 and the district was reduced to a sub-collectorate level under Thane district.
