They are the AHL affiliate to the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League , and are the 2013 and 2017 Calder Cup champions.

The team was founded in 1996 as an expansion franchise in the International Hockey League (IHL), and moved to the AHL following the IHL's folding in 2001.
