The GE AC44C6M is an AC-traction 4,400-horsepower (3,300 kW) diesel locomotive, rebuilt from GE Transportation Dash 9 locomotives. AC44C6M rebuilds have been done by GE (now Wabtec ), American Motive Power, Inc., and Norfolk Southern Railway 's Juniata and Roanoke Shops, starting in September 2015.
The GE Dash 9-40CW is a 4,000-horsepower (3,000 kW) diesel-electric locomotive built by GE Transportation Systems of Erie, Pennsylvania, between January 1996 and December 2004. 1,090 were built for Norfolk Southern Railway, as road numbers 8889 to 9978. 53 GE Dash 8-44CWs built to Dash 9 specifications were also built for CSX Transportation, carrying road numbers 9000 to 9052.
This version of the Dash 9 was manufactured between January and March 1995. All 125 examples of this model are owned by the Norfolk Southern Railway. The AC4400CW was the first GE locomotive to offer an optional self-steering truck design, intended to increase adhesion and reduce wear on the railhead. [1] This option was specified by Canadian Pacific Railway, Cartier Railway, CSX for their units 201-599, Ferromex, Ferrosur, and Kansas City Southern Railway.
Some units sold to Fortescue Metals Group, Quebec, North Shore & Labrador, Canadian National, and Norfolk Southern (including ex-KCS units) and rebuilt into AC44C6M models. 100 units sold to KCS and some later sold to NS. 5530-5532 are warranty protection units, which were renumbered from 5841-5843. 25 of the GECX units were rebuilt to NS AC44C6Ms.
The C40-9 featured the standard cab design and was the only model in the Dash-9 series to do so. It is essentially identical to the wide-cab C40-9W model otherwise. All units had rooftop-mounted air conditioner units which gave them their distinct "top hat" look. Norfolk Southern Railway (NS) was the sole operator of this model. [2]
