Wetzel County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia.As of the 2020 census, the population was 14,442. [1] Its county seat is New Martinsville. [2] The county, founded in 1846, is named for Lewis Wetzel, a famous frontiersman and Indian fighter. [3]
Most West Virginians also include Wetzel County, and sometimes Tyler County, directly to the south of Marshall County, as a part of the northern panhandle, although they do not lie strictly within the northern extension. [2] Prior to the 2020 redistricting, they formed the core of West Virginia's 1st congressional district.

Fifty of them existed at the time of the Wheeling Convention in 1861, during the American Civil War, when those counties seceded from the Commonwealth of Virginia to form the new state of West Virginia.
