The Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Program is a federally funded program established in the United States in 1972 "to improve the supply, distribution, retention and quality of primary care and other health practitioners in medically underserved areas."
The North Carolina AHEC Program evolved from national and state concerns with the supply, distribution, retention and quality of health professionals. In 1970, a report from the Carnegie Commission recommended the development of a nationwide system of Area Health Education Centers.
The Greensboro Area Health Education Center (Greensboro AHEC or GAHEC) changed its name to "Piedmont AHEC" on February 1, 2023. It is one of nine regional centers affiliated with the North Carolina Area Health Education Centers Program. It is administered by the University of North Carolina School of Medicine at Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
