Eastland Mall opened on February 16, 1967, anchored by JCPenney and Sears, both of which had moved from downtown Bloomington. [1] The mall was built on the east side of town, at the southwestern corner of East Empire Street (Illinois Route 9) and Veterans Parkway (formerly U.S. Route 66, now Interstate 55 Business Loop). [1]
MetLife bought the mall in 1986 for $21 million. In 1988, Carson Pirie Scott sold its store to Von Maur. Montgomery Ward closed its store in 1997 [2] and was replaced with a Hobby Lobby crafts store in 1999. [3] Also in 1997, Stein Mart added its first central Illinois location to the middle of the mall, [4] while MC Sports moved to Eastland. [5]
