The Elijah Burt House is located south of the center of East Longmeadow, on the north side of Chestnut Street roughly midway between Shaker Road and Prospect Street. It is a 2 + 1 ⁄ 2-story wood-frame structure, five bays wide, with a side-gable roof, clapboard siding, and a central chimney.
Longmeadow's village green was laid out in the early 18th century, and it is the area around which the town center developed. It is located on a sandy ridge on a terrace about 1 mile (1.6 km) east of the Connecticut River, with a flood plain in between that now also carries Interstate 91.
First Congregational Church of East Longmeadow is a historic church in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts. Built in 1828, it is the oldest church building in East Longmeadow, and houses its oldest congregation. The church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The commercial center of town is an area called "The Longmeadow Shops" [citation needed], including restaurants and clothing stores. According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 9.7 square miles (25.0 km 2 ), of which 9.1 square miles (23.6 km 2 ) are land and 0.50 square miles (1.3 km 2 ), or 5.34%, are water.
Longmeadow Street, located on a terrace above that plain, was from an early date the principal north-south route on the east side of the river, and the town's principal thoroughfare. In the 19th century, the quarrying of brownstone became a major industry, prompting a shift in population away from the river and toward the quarries further east.
