WRKZ (99.7 FM), branded 99.7 The Blitz, is a commercial active rock radio station licensed to Columbus, Ohio, and serving the Columbus metro area.It is owned by the North American Broadcasting Company, along with sister stations 920 WMNI and 103.9 WJKR.
The 96.3 MHz frequency was first occupied by WLWF, a station owned by the Crosley Broadcasting Corporation along with sister station WLWC (now WCMH-TV); WLWF broadcast from 1949–1953. [2] WLVQ itself began on April 1, 1959, as WTVN-FM, owned by Taft Broadcasting Company along with sister stations WTVN (AM) and WTVN-TV (now WSYX). [ 3 ]
The station also featured "Fritz the Nite Owl," who hosted midnight movies during the 1970s, and the Sunday state government talk show called Capital Square in the 1990s. Throughout much of the 1990s and early years of the millennium, WBNS-TV was home to the 10TV Kids News Network (KNN); a local show, "produced by kids, for kids."
WBNS's sister station, WBNS (AM 1460), was established in 1922. It is one of Ohio's oldest stations. In 1929, it was acquired by the Wolfe Family, which also owned the major daily newspaper, The Columbus Dispatch. WBNS began FM broadcasts as early as 1940 with experimental station W8XVH. In 1941, it became commercial station W45CM, and later WELD.
In 1949, an FM station was added, WOSU-FM at 89.7 MHz. At first, the FM station largely simulcast the AM's programming. Because 820 AM was a daytimer, required to go off the air at night, WOSU-FM was able to continue the AM's programs into the evening. In 1956, a TV station was added, WOSU-TV Channel 34.
