The composer's parents, Franz Schubert, a schoolmaster, and his wife Maria, a cook, lived in an apartment in the house, then called Zum roten Krebsen ("The Red Crab"), in Himmelpfortgrund , a district of Vienna. Their son Franz was born here on 31 January 1797; he was the twelfth of fourteen children, of whom five survived infancy.

The Vienna Museum (German: Wien Museum or Museen der Stadt Wien) is a group of museums in Vienna consisting of the museums of the history of the city. In addition to the main building in Karlsplatz, the group includes some locations, numerous specialised museums, musicians' residences and archaeological excavations.
The painter, and a friend of Schubert, Moritz von Schwind, was responsible for the likeness of the portrayal. The pedestal, showing reliefs by Kundmann, was designed by Theophil Hansen. [2] The statue was made of Carrara marble. [3] The foundation stone was laid in 1868, in the presence of the Mayor of Vienna, Andreas Zelinka. [2]
