Manistee (/ m æ n ɪ s t i / man-iss-TEE) is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. Located in southwestern Manistee County , it is part of the northwestern Lower Peninsula . Manistee is the county seat of Manistee County, and its population was 6,259 at the 2020 census . [ 5 ]
According to the United States Census Bureau, Manistee Township has a total area of 48.2 square miles (125 km 2), of which 44.4 square miles (115 km 2) are land and 3.8 square miles (9.8 km 2), or 7.92%, are water. [1] The Manistee River crosses the southern part of the township, flowing into Manistee Lake at the southwest border.

The City of Manistee was founded in 1841 when John and Joseph Stronach established a sawmill within the present city limits of Manistee. The city almost immediately became a lumber boom town, with 200 people living there in 1852 and 1000 by 1861. In the 1860s, the city grew even further, with 300 buildings constructed in 1869 alone.
