Murray City Park's most recognizable feature is a large wooden sculpture of Chief Wasatch, a fictional composite of local tribes, [1] by artist Peter Wolf Toth, standing at the main entrance of the park on State Street and 5100 South.
Murray City was platted in 1873 and incorporated in 1891. It was named for John Murray Brown, the original owner of the town site. [4] John Murray Brown was an early settler who bought up the land to lay out the town. He built a hotel in 1875 for the local workers but sold his interests in the community a few years later to a large coal company.

Charles Brown was mayor of Murray from 1906 to 1909 and lived at 215 East 4800 South. He operated the Buster Brown store and later the Palace Meat Market. George Huscher was the first Socialist mayor of Murray from 1912 to 1915 and lived with his wife, Elizabeth, across the street at 264 East 4800 South.
