MIT has relatively few formal traditions, compared to many other universities, but has a rich culture of informal traditions and jargon. There are a few "big events" such as Commencement (graduation), but many smaller, decentralized activities sponsored by departments, labs, living groups, student activities, and ad hoc groups of MIT community members united by common interests.
The Mount Auburn Young Ladies Institute was established in 1856 to provide higher education to females. It was known for a strenuous curriculum, particularly in science and mathematics. The Institute was located on twenty-three acres of land that was landscaped by a gardener.
A cursory search of Institute yearbooks will show that dining, and later, fine dining, has remained of particular interest to participants. Many chapters and ILGs extol the quality of their gourmet or commercial kitchens in their photo tours and rush materials. The tradition of fine dining among MIT fraternities is old. Very old.

In 1971 a Commission on MIT Education began investigating General Institute Requirements in the humanities and social sciences. Two years later in 1973 the institute, in an effort to closely connect the humanities with science and engineering. As part of this restructuring, Psychology was subsumed into the Brain and Cognitive Sciences program. [10]
