St. John's Cathedral (Irish: Ardeaglais Naomh Eoin) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Limerick, Ireland. Designed by the architect Philip Charles Hardwick , ground was broken in 1857 and the first Mass celebrated on 7 March 1859.
The Diocese of Limerick (Irish: Deoise Luimnigh) is a Latin diocese of the Catholic Church in mid-western Ireland, one of six suffragan dioceses in the ecclesiastical province of Cashel and Emly. The cathedral church of the diocese is St John's Cathedral in Limerick. The incumbent bishop of the diocese is Brendan Leahy.
It was originally a prebendal church, but by 1418 was attached to the Archdeaconry of Limerick. [4] Saint Michael's is one of the five original parishes of Limerick City. It was a joint parish of Saint John's until 1704 when Father Murtagh O'Hehir became the first Catholic parish priest of the new parish. [5] [6]
Broad Street, John Street and Mungret Street are the main streets in the district. St. John's Square, a prized early Georgian development is located here as is St. John's Cathedral and the Milk Market which is located off Mungret Street. Irishtown is one of the oldest districts in Limerick dating from the Middle Ages.

St John's Hospital is located adjacent to the cathedral which dates back to 1780 and was founded by Lady Hartstonge and other benefactors as a Fever and Lock Hospital and treated epidemics during the Great Famine (1845-1847).
