"San Juan" is a contraction of the city's traditional name of "San Juan del Monte" (lit. ' Saint John of the Mountain '). As with numerous other places in the Philippines, the name combines a patron saint and a toponym; in this case Saint John the Baptist with the locale's hilly terrain and relatively higher elevation compared to surrounding areas.
Santuario del Santo Cristo Parish, also known as the Church of San Juan del Monte, is a church and convento in San Juan, Metro Manila, Philippines. It is under the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Manila. The church was built in 1602–1604 by the Dominicans on land that was donated to the order.

Pinaglabanan Shrine was built in 1976 to commemorate the 1896 Battle of Pinaglabanan in the city, then known as the town of San Juan del Monte. [2] The battle was part of a campaign by Katipunan revolutionaries, led by Andrés Bonifacio, who intended to seize El Deposito, an underground reservoir supplying water to Intramuros, and El Polvorín (the gunpowder depot).
On August 30, 1896, the Battle of San Juan del Monte between Filipino and Spanish troops occurred on the tract of land fronting the newly built church. The battle, which was one of the first in the Philippine Revolution, is commemorated annually at the shrine and park that stands today at the site.
In 1974, the Pinaglabanan Shrine was unveiled in San Juan, along Pinaglabanan Street. "Pinaglabanan" is a Tagalog word for "fought over". The present-day San Juan Elementary School stands on the former grounds of the ruined El Polvorín. [12] In 2006, a museum for the Katipunan was opened by the San Juan city government located by the shrine. [13]
