This is a list of genres of literature and entertainment (film, television, music, and video games), excluding genres in the visual arts.. Genre is the term for any category of creative work, which includes literature and other forms of art or entertainment (e.g. music)—whether written or spoken, audio or visual—based on some set of stylistic criteria.

Genres are formed shared literary conventions that change over time as new genres emerge while others fade. As such, genres are not wholly fixed categories of writing; rather, their content evolves according to social and cultural contexts and contemporary questions of morals and norms.
While there are a limited number of super genres, there are at least fifty macro genres. A macro genre contains interchangeable elements that pair with super genres to create a more detailed story. By pairing a macro genre with a super genre, more specific expectations emerge within a story. For example, “Time Travel” is a macro genre.

Spec writing is also unique in that the writer must pitch the idea to producers. In order to sell the script, it must have an excellent title, good writing, and a great logline, laying out what the movie is about. A well-written logline will convey the tone of the film, introduce the main character, and touch on the primary conflict.
