Juvenile cellulitis, also known as puppy strangles or juvenile pyoderma, is an uncommon disease of dogs. [1] Symptoms include dermatitis , lethargy , depression and lameness . When puppies are first presented with what appears to be staphylococcal pyoderma , juvenile cellulitis, a relatively rare condition, may not be considered.
It occurs in humans [1] and cats, more frequently occurring in dogs. It was first described in dogs by Griffin and colleagues in 1979. [2] [3] DLE is one form of cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE). DLE occurs in dogs in two forms: a classical facial predominant form or generalized with other areas of the body affected.
A dog with degenerative myelopathy often stands with its legs close together and may not correct an unusual foot position due to a lack of conscious proprioception. Canine degenerative myelopathy, also known as chronic degenerative radiculomyelopathy, is an incurable, progressive disease of the canine spinal cord that is similar in many ways to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Up to 80 percent of dogs infected will have symptoms, but the mortality rate is only 5 to 8 percent. [5] Infectious canine hepatitis is a sometimes fatal infectious disease of the liver. [6] Canine herpesvirus is an infectious disease that is a common cause of death in puppies less than three weeks old. [7]
Treatment with corticosteroids may put the dog into remission, or diazepam may control the symptoms. [4] Typically the two drugs are used together. [5] There is a good prognosis, and symptoms usually resolve with treatment within a week, although lifelong treatment may be necessary. [3]
The goal of treatment with immunosuppressive agents such as corticosteroids is to decrease lung inflammation and subsequent scarring. Responses to treatment vary. Those whose conditions improve with immunosuppressive treatment probably do not have idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis has no significant treatment or cure.
