The Eastern Time Zone (ET) is a time zone encompassing part or all of 23 states in the eastern part of the United States, parts of eastern Canada, and the state of Quintana Roo in Mexico. Eastern Standard Time ( EST ) is five hours behind Coordinated Universal Time ( UTC−05:00 ).
In 2016, a committee in the state was formed to consider having Massachusetts adopt Atlantic Standard Time year round to prevent sunsets from occurring before 16:30 and eliminate the need to change clocks at the beginning and end of daylight saving time. [3]
(See map inset right.) In 2005, Indiana passed legislation that took effect on April 2, 2006, that placed the entire state on daylight saving time (see Time in Indiana). Before then, Indiana officially used standard time year-round, with the following exceptions: The portions of Indiana that were on Central Time observed daylight saving time.
Independent of daylight saving time, solar noon in Connecticut on the March equinox is approximately 11:54 in the northeast corner and 12:02 in the southwest corner. New England, which includes Connecticut, is one of the few areas in the United States where solar noon is before noon.
Like the other five New England states, which also use the Eastern Time Zone, sunset in the winter in Rhode Island can occur as early as 4:30 p.m. Most of the New England states have considered using the Atlantic Time Zone without daylight saving to mitigate this.
